Researchers have found that students generally score lower on standardized tests at the end of the summer than they do at the beginning. What better way to help your kids take the mystery out of reading by enrolling them in a summer reading club like the one organized jointly by TD Bank Financial Group, Library and Archives Canada and the Toronto Public Library?

This year's theme, Crack the case with Agent 009, is a fun way to keep children of all ages engaged in reading throughout the summer months. With more than 250,000 reading kits being distributed this year that consist of an activity booklet, poster, and collectible stickers, it's no surprise that the love of reading will be alive this summer in libraries across Canada.

Here are a few reasons why you should consider enrolling your child in a summer reading club:

Maintaining Performance: Reading just six books during the summer has the potential to keep a struggling reader from regressing. Parents should be mindful of their child's reading level when choosing books. Libraries often run summer reading programs that provide guidance, such as the award-winning TD Summer Reading Club, in which nearly two million books are read by children each summer.

Improving Performance: Summer reading can help improve literacy levels, giving children the opportunity to return to school with advanced reading skills. The majority of reading club participants, librarians, and parents believe summer reading programs result in improved reading performance.

Increased Knowledge Base: Reading naturally expands your knowledge of a variety of different topics. Whether it's a book, newspaper or magazine, reading can help you discover new facts about the world around you.

Learning Confidence: It makes sense that a child with good reading skills will have higher confidence to continue with reading activities, both at school and at home. Participation in group reading clubs not only improves reading confidence, it can increase a child's social confidence as a result of enjoying interaction with others.

For more information on the TD Summer Reading Club please visit www.td-club-td.ca.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Green tips for camping

(NC)—Before you head out to one of Canada's beautiful parks for that much anticipated camping trip, consider the following tips that will enhance your camping experience and care for the environment.

Remember that you're going to enjoy nature and that means caring for the environment, so that others can have the same experience after you've left.

We all know the cardinal rule “Leave the area just as you found it,” but here some other tips to keep in mind on your camping trip:

1. Use reusable dishes: Do not use styrofoam and plastic picnic dishes and flatware. Washing dishes can be a chore, but it will reduce the amount of garbage you produce onsite.

2. Sort your garbage: Bringing different waste bags to separate food scraps and other garbage from paper waste can be helpful. When sorted, recycled fibre paper napkins like those from White Swan, can multitask to help you start a campfire later.

3. Repackage food: Remove all food packaging and repack it in reusable containers. Don't bring individual packed food items, and clean up all food scraps while camping. Food left out will attract unwanted wildlife.

4. Meal time: When eating, be sure to use White Swan napkins to help keep mess to a minimum. Made from 100 per cent recycled paper and created using environmentally sustainable manufacturing process, they have less of an impact on the environment.

5. Bathroom Etiquette: Bring and use one-ply products like White Swan bathroom tissue because it's made from 100 per cent recycled fibre, and breaks down faster.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Get the most out of every drop of fuel

(NC)—These days, it seems like everyone is tightening their wallet, and drivers everywhere are looking to get the most out of every tank of gasoline. While some people use alternate modes of transportation, many need their cars on a daily basis. For those in the driver's seat, there are simple ways to increase fuel efficiency and save at the pump.

“With the cost of vehicle ownership and car care growing every year, we all want to be more fuel efficient,” says Jens Mueller-Belau, Fuels Portfolio and Category Manager North America, Shell Retail. “Using money-saving driving techniques and car care tips are an easy way to help get the most out of every gasoline purchase.”

Following are ten Shell “Fuelstretch” tips designed to help drivers save money.

1. Drive smoothly: Avoid heavy acceleration or heavy braking. Speeding, rapid acceleration and heavy braking can use as much as 33% more fuel than sensible driving.*

2. Service your car regularly: A well-tuned engine alone can improve fuel economy by up to 4%*, so follow your car manufacturer's recommendation for servicing, and change your oil as required. It's also important to keep your entire vehicle well maintained. A poorly maintained vehicle can increase fuel consumption by up to 50%*. Even replacing dirty spark plugs can improve fuel consumption by 5%*, so you should read the vehicle owner's manual thoroughly to familiarize yourself with its mechanical maintenance requirements.

3. Make sure tires are not over or under-inflated: Proper air pressure cutsdown on fuel used while driving. A tire that is under-inflated by just two psi (14 kPa) can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as two percent and reduce the tire's life by about 6,500 kilometres.*

4. Use the correct grade of oil in your engine: Following your manufacturer's motor oil recommendation can improve fuel efficiency by one to two percent. Look for motor oil that says “energy conserving” on the label.

5. Choose a high-quality gasoline: Top automakers say thatcarbon deposits can build up on critical engine parts, which can decrease the power, performance and fuel efficiency of your vehicle. Audi, BMW, GM, Honda, Toyota and Volkswagen introduced a TOP TIER detergent standard to raise the bar on fuel quality beyond minimum requirements and to help drivers avoid lower quality gasolines. All Shell gasolines meet TOP TIER standards and are designed to stop gunky build-up on critical engine parts, which helps cars to perform at their best.

6. Use cruise control on major roads and in free-flowing traffic: Maintaining a constant speed can improvegasoline mileage.

7. Avoid idling: When you idle, it wastes gasoline, and you are getting exactly 0 km/litre.

8. Avoid higher speeds: The faster you go the more wind resistance you'll encounter and the more fuel your vehicle will consume just to maintain speed. In general, increasing your speed from 100 km/h to 120 km/h will increase fuel consumption by about 20 percent.

9. Plan your outings to avoid separate trips: Combine your errands into one outing to avoid short separate trips. This planning helps avoid unnecessary cold starts and keeps your car's engine running warmly and more efficiently.

10. Get rewards for your fuel purchases: From May 4 to July 12, 2009, Shell customers will receive ten times bonus AIR MILES rewards with a minimum $30.00 purchase of Shell V-Power gasoline or Shell V-Power diesel, and five times bonus reward miles with a minimum $30.00 purchase of Shell bronze, Shell silver gasoline or Shell diesel. AIR MILES collectors can redeem their reward miles for great rewards.

Whether running errands around town or commuting to work, these money-saving driving techniques can help you get the most out of every drop of fuel. More information is available online at www.shell.ca/fuelstretch.

*Estimates for fuel savings from sensible driving are based on studies and literature reviews performed by Energy and Environmental Analysis, Inc., Washington, DC., Natural Resources Canada Office of Energy Efficiency Auto$mart Thinking program and Transport Canada Media Room.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Use sweatproof sunscreen this summer when playing outdoor sports

(NC)—There is nothing quite as invigorating as a run through the park or a game of touch football in the dog days of summer when the sun is hot and the air is warm and inviting.

As you sweat it out this summer, keep in mind that your skin can take a beating under the hot summer sun, especially when you exercise. In fact, the more you sweat, the more your skin temporarily loses its natural ability to protect itself from both burning UVB rays and aging UVA rays. Even if you wear a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF) sunscreen, sweat and humidity can cause sunscreen weardown, putting you at risk.

Here are some tips for finding a durable sport sunscreen this summer:

• Look for sunscreens that are made specifically for sports; ones that provide exceptional, long-lasting sport sun protection that keeps skin well protected during play
• Look for very sweat-resistant and very water-resistant products, indicators of increased sunscreen durability
• Look for ultra lightweight, non-comedogenic lotions that won't clog pores or cause breakouts or run into eyes to cause stinging
• Look for a sport sunscreen with a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF) that provides broad-spectrum protection and apply generously. Most adults do not follow sunscreen application instructions, achieving only 10-25% of the expected SPF. For optimal protection, it is important to apply sunscreen generously, using approximately 2 full tablespoons to cover the entire body. Neutrogena Ultimate Sport Sunscreen Lotion SPF 45 and Sunscreen Sprays SPF 45 and 60, contains innovative stabilizing Helioplex technology, which delivers strong and long-lasting protection against both burning UVB and aging UVA rays. These products also contain a matrixed waterproof technology comprised of large molecules that create an invisible, yet breathable, shield on the skin to help keep sunscreen in place during physical activity

While no sunscreen is clinically proven to minimize or prevent skin cancer, dermatologists have long recognized that exposure to UVA and UVB rays can promote the risk of skin cancer.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Looking for that extra edge in the sport you love? Try seeing your best

(NC)—Images of summertime are usually cast in a light of hot, lazy, relaxing days by the pool, but for sports lovers that boost of vitamin D has them dreaming about baseball, yachting, golfing, swimming, soccer and anything else that calls for action under the sun. No matter what the sport, vision drives performance. So to excel during competition and have that extra edge, make sure your eyesight is in top shape.

Photochromic lenses are great for outdoor sports where you move frequently from bright sunlight to shade during the course of a game, as well as on days when it's partly sunny, partly cloudy. Even if you have perfect vision, the right pair of photochromic lenses may help you see better than your rivals.

Photochromic lenses, such as Transitions lenses, enhance contrast and eliminate glare, reducing eye strain whether you are on the green or in the ballpark. They also block 100 per cent of exposure to the sun's harmful Ultra Violet (UV) rays, and can help prevent irreversible, long-term eye damage such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Sports enthusiasts can feel confident that they are also helping to protect the health and wellness of their eyes for the future.

“Understanding that connection from overall vision to sports performance is key to ensuring you are at the top of your game,” says Dr. Trevor Miranda, optometrist. “Proper eye care, which includes regular routine eye examinations and lens selection are absolutely critical to living a healthy, active lifestyle. Tell your eye care professional which sports you enjoy and discuss the best lenses for your particular sport.”

When it comes to achieving your personal best in sports, remember that great eyesight is a key factor in athletic performance. You might want to put photochromic lenses at the top of your list when you shop for gear and gadgets to enhance your game.

Source: www.newscanada.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://myleisurenews.blogspot.com/2009/06/looking-for-that-extra-edge-in-sport.html' title='Looking for that extra edge in the sport you love? If done right, your yard can become more than an extension of your home - it can be your very own private escape! An outdoor space needs to be designed and decorated with the same care and attention as a kitchen or bedroom. From choosing the right furniture, to adding the right decorative compliments, here are a few key considerations to keep in mind when creating an outdoor retreat.

Why sit when you can lounge?

Do you want to use your space to host parties, relax in a zen-inspired garden, or give your children a space where they can play? How you plan on using the space will determine what type of furniture you need. And with outdoor furniture, you can be a little more creative: chairs can be replaced with recliners, swings, loungers or even hammocks. Decorative accents are also essential: throw a few colourful pillows on your outdoor furniture or put an area rug under your outdoor patio set. As long as fashion meets function, almost anything goes.

Be wary of the weather

While you don't have to worry about rain resistant finishes on your living room couch, the same cannot be said for your patio furnishings. It is important to keep the climate in mind when choosing your outdoor furniture. For example, if you live in a windy area, select heavier furniture as lighter plastic chairs are likely to turn up on your neighbour's lawn! If you experience heavy, regular rainfall, try to stay away from materials like rod iron that are more likely to rust. And to lengthen the life of your outdoor pieces, make sure to store your patio furniture when weather isn't in your favour.

Sneak it away

The days of hiding outdoor pillows in a boring and old plastic bin are long gone. And today you don't even have to worry about finding the perfect match as many outdoor furniture sets include beautiful deck boxes that help pull the look of your outdoor space together.

Set the mood

Like any room in your house lighting is key and when it comes to the outdoors, solar powered lights are a great option. For more detailed information on cleaning and maintenance visit Broil King Gas Grills online at www.broilkingbbq.com.

- To keep cast iron cooking grids in top shape it is best to leave them a bit dirty. After you are finished cooking, turn your burners off and give the grids a quick brush down while they are still hot. Food residue will come off easier when grills are hot and you will leave behind the grease and oils that keep your grills seasoned. When you use the barbecue the next time, just give the grills another brushing before putting on the food.

- To prevent food from sticking, always prep your grill. Using a cloth, rub it with oil. Heat the barbecue as hot as possible, then turn it down to the temperature you want to cook at.

- Keep the lid down. Lifting the lid allows heat to escape from the barbecue, increasing total cooking time. A closed lid also reduces the chance of flare-ups. Open only when turning foods or checking for doneness.

- A tomato or sugar based sauce should be reserved until the last 10 ñ 15 minutes of cooking, as the sugar has a tendency to caramelize or burn if subjected to high heat for a prolonged period of time.

- Before using bamboo skewers for your kebab and satays, soak them in water for 30 minutes to prevent the wood from burning.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Home security checklist for cottage goers

How to protect your home away from home

(NC)—When you're going away on your annual cottage vacation you want to rest – and rest easy too. You want peace of mind that your home is as safe as it can be from burglary or other damage.

According to Patrice De Luca, V.P. of Marketing and Business Development for Reliance Protectron Security Services, there are several key steps you should take to ensure peace of mind when away from home. The following Reliance Protectron home safety checklist can help you plan important safety measures before your departure:

Did you suspend your newspaper and mail delivery; or have a neighbor collect them for you?Does the house look lived-in?
That means having someone park their car in your driveway if you're taking yours. You can even ask a neighbor to put a bag of garbage at your curb on garbage day.

Did you set your lights on timers, in various rooms?
With some timers, the lights go on and off at different times each day, which means a burglar can't pick up on a pattern. Motion sensor lights outside can also deter a burglar. Consider installing them in front and back.

Did you ensure that all your doors and windows are locked and secure?
Don't forget about the garage. Place a bar or stick of wood in the lower track of sliding doors or windows, to be extra safe.

Did you turn off the water-main and unplug the major appliances as an added precaution?Did you inform a neighbor when you're leaving and returning, and ask them to keep an eye out for anything suspicious?
Leave them a phone number where you can be reached, and a spare set of your keys in case of an emergency.

Did you consider a home security system?
A home security system is a very effective deterrent. When looking for their targets, thieves usually select an unoccupied home with the easiest access. Why not make it difficult for them. A home protected by a home security system is three times less susceptible to a break in than one without a system. Home security system decals and yard signs are also an effective deterrent. Make sure your home security system includes a loud inside house siren, detectors at all exterior doors, and motion sensors in the master bedroom and main living areas.

De Luca says the latest technology in home security systems can now allow to monitor your home from a distance by wireless transmission (SkyGARD) if you have a cell phone as a primary line for example or simply for added protection. The home security system is linked to our ULC interlinked remote monitoring centres that protects your home 24 hours a day against burglars, fire, carbon monoxide poisoning and floods by supervising the temperature, electrical system and point of entries of your home.

“We can even configure the system to alert you by e-mail of the duration of comings and goings in your home with TeleGARD (cleaning staff, neighbors, family)” De Luca added. Take a motorcycle training course

If you're new to riding, then take an approved rider training course. Not only will you be a better rider for it, but you could be eligible for a discount that will lower your motorcycle insurance premium.

Ride carefully

It likely comes as no surprise that multiple tickets and accidents will increase how much you pay in motorcycle insurance coverage. With a bad record, you can find yourself paying much higher insurance premiums over the years.

Equip your bike with an anti-theft device

There are a wide range of anti-theft devices designed specifically for motorcycles, and some insurance companies will offer you a discount if you have an approved one installed on your bike.

Ride a bike that costs less to insure

The type of bike you choose will affect your motorcycle insurance rate. For example, avoid motorcycles that are attractive to thieves because a bike known to be a target will likely cost more to insure.

Ask about discounts

While the availability of discounts will vary depending on your insurer, where you live and whether you meet the eligibility requirements, asking about them could save you significant money. Common discounts include the multi-vehicle discount (for those with more than one motorcycle), the multi-line discount (for those who want to insure their auto or home), and the discount for belonging to a recognized motorcycle club or association.

Increase your deductibles

Insurance was really meant to cover you for damages you could never afford on your own. So keeping in mind the value of your bike, raise them as high as you can afford knowing that the deductible is how much you'll have to cover if you need to submit a claim.

Cancelling your motorcycle policy at the end of the riding season will not save you money

Motorcycle insurance, in Canada, is seasonal and the premiums are seasonally adjusted. If you cancel the insurance for the winter you will not get any premium refunded.

Shop around for insurance before buying to save money

Motorcycle insurance rates vary across insurers so don't assume the first quote you get is the best quote you'll get. At sites like www.kanetix.ca, you can easily get quotes online when you're ready to shop for your motorcycle insurance.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Is the annual auto tune up fact, or fiction?

(NC)—It used to be one of the standard pieces of auto maintenance advice given to young drivers: a car needs to be taken in for a tune-up once every year.

As time has gone on however, vehicle technology has improved and standard maintenance schedules have changed, leaving many drivers uncertain about what exactly a tune-up now entails, and whether their car even needs one at all.

“The old rules no longer apply,” said Megan Currie, Honeywell Consumer Products Group group marketing manager. “Some vehicles need a tune-up every two years or 48,000 kilometers, while some new vehicles can go as long as 161,000 kilometers before needing one. It's important to check your owner's manual for your vehicle's standard maintenance schedule and take it in for routine care.”

When the term “tune-up” was first coined, it literally referred to the practice of tuning an engine's ignition timing. In modern vehicles, this is handled by computer, and the term is now used to refer to a single vehicle service that typically involves installing new spark plugs, fuel and air filters and ignition wires along with a quick test of the computer.

“Be sure that if you don't plan to do the job yourself, you take your vehicle to a qualified shop,” Curry explains. “They'll be able to explain exactly what needs to be done.”

Either way, it's smart to get educated on what type of plug you can have installed since not all spark plugs are created equal and many are made with different metal types. The most advanced spark plugs are made with iridium and platinum and feature what is called finewire technology. These plugs are a fantastic choice since the finewire centrewire in a premium plug, like the Autolite XP Xtreme Performance plug, lowers the voltage required from the coil to make the spark jump. When a plug fouls, buildup on the ceramic insulator provides an alternate path for the energy to ground to the shell (the plug's outer layer). So if the plug is a finewire, the plug will need more buildup to actually “foul” because energy will always take the path of least resistance. That means these plugs are more durable, last longer and provide a faster, more efficient burn.

Even if your car isn't scheduled for a tune-up in the near term, switching out worn spark plugs can help achieve better performance and better fuel efficiency.

Want to learn how to do the job yourself? The Autolite brand website has a great “how to” area that provides step-by-step video tutorials on changing spark plugs, installing a wire set, flushing and filling your cooling system and more. You can also download these videos to your iPod so the videos can be available to you in the palm of your hand.

Check out autolite.com and click on “car care” for more information.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Centennial of Flight is inspiring career dreams

(NC)—This summer as thousands of Canadians gather at air shows across the country, our Air Force pilots, engineers, and technicians will not be shy to tell you that “there really is no life like it”.

Watch for kiosks and displays while at the air shows, and at scores of other annual events, where you may also get an opportunity to tour a CF-18 fighter jet cockpit. Golfers wait all winter long to get out on the green to work on their swing and perfect their putt. Both avid and novice golfers are always looking for that extra edge for better performance in their game. But did you ever think that eye health may be hindering a perfect score?

The eyes are just as vulnerable to harmful ultra violet (UV) rays as is the skin. Invisible UV rays and visible glare are present every day, year-round, on cloudy days, in bright light, and everything in between. In fact, 92 per cent of Canadians are aware that prolonged exposure to UV radiation causes skin cancer, but only nine per cent of Canadians know that prolonged sun exposure can also cause damage to the eyes and the sensitive skin around the eyes. Surprisingly, according to a recent survey, only 18 per cent of respondents wear eyewear with UV protection even when they plan to be out in the sun for long periods of time. Exposure to UV rays can cause damage to your eyes that leads to eye conditions, eye diseases and diminished sight.

PGA professional golfer Ian Leggatt has partnered with Transitions Optical to help encourage golfers and spectators to learn about eye health and protection for the future. “My eyes are vital to the success that I have had in my career – the smallest extra margin of clarity can give me an advantage over a competitor,” says Leggatt. “It is of the utmost importance that I protect my eyes. Photochromic lenses work perfectly by reducing glare and improving contrast by blocking 100 per cent of UV rays.”

Enthusiasts – professional and amateurs alike – benefit from optimal sight and because of outdoor lighting conditions, which often times change during the course of a round of golf, Transitions lenses can actually help enhance the quality of a golfers' vision while playing.

More information and tips about healthy sight can be found online at www.transitions.com.

Source: www.newscanada.com

A golf lesson is an investment in your game

By Mark Dottori

(NC)—Ask any golfer – you can learn the game, but you will never perfect it. However, you can work to improve your performance on the course by fitting yourself with appropriate golf equipment, scheduling time to practice, and taking lessons from a Canadian PGA Professional.

“No matter what level of golfer you are, everyone needs some help with their game,” says Gary Bernard, the Canadian PGA's Director of Education. “Even PGA Tour golfers are constantly having their game evaluated.”

Lessons are important not only to ensure golfers don't lapse into bad habits with their swing, but also because teaching methods are constantly evolving and improving as are the tools to aid instructors in the teaching process. Video and launch monitors now allow instructors to fine tune athlete performance like never before, complementing traditional teaching methods.

Last year, the Canadian PGA and Callaway Golf Canada partnered to create a promotion with participating pro shops that awarded golfers with a complimentary 30-minute lesson with a Canadian PGA professional with the purchase of a Callaway Golf driver or set of irons. This partnership continues for the 2009 golf season, and is valid for club purchases made between May 1st and July 31st.

“We wanted to introduce golfers purchasing new equipment to the benefits of having Canadian PGA instruction – particularly those who might not otherwise encounter it – while at the same time offering a tune-up or extra time to golfers who already take lessons,” added Bernard.

Information on the Canadian PGA and the Callaway Golf Lesson program can be found at www.mycallaway.ca or www.cpga.com.

Source: www.newscanada.com
Visit our website: www.thenewsleader.ca

Boating safety tips from Transport Canada

(NC)—On average, 150 people die on Canadian waterways every year in boating accidents. Many of those deaths are preventable. You never know what could happen while you're out on the water. Keeping this fact in mind, Transport Canada reminds boaters to:

• Always wear a lifejacket and make sure your vessel is equipped with enough Canadian-approved lifejackets for each of your guests.

• Have proof of competency on board at all times.

• Take a boating safety course.

• Know the rules of the road.

• Carry the required safety equipment for your vessel such as paddles, bailer, flashlight, buoyant line, anchor etc.

• Keep clear of swimmers, divers and other vessels.

• Navigate your boat on the correct side of the buoy.

• Wear proper clothing and check the weather forecast before setting out.

Whether you're a boater, diver, angler, hunter or water sports enthusiast, there are rules and information you should know before heading out on the water. That's why the Canadian government is enhancing the environmental protection and shipping safety of our waterways.

Transport Canada works in partnership with Environment Canada, and the Canadian Coast Guard and the National Defense to ensure vessels operating in and passing through the Arctic Archipelago comply with Canada's laws, including rules governing international shipping through domestic waterways. This partnership ensures vessels continue to operate in the Arctic safely and with respect for the environment.

Transport Canada's major contribution to the government's efforts in the Arctic is expanding its National Aerial Surveillance Program to operate in the North. Part of the program's goals is to deter would-be-polluters, provide emergency response to those in distress, and acquire security-related information. To help achieve these goals, Transport Canada works closely with its partners. The department provides aircraft with state-of-the-art sensors that patrol our oceans to detect ships and pollution. With the help of Environment Canada, the program includes a satellite surveillance system to direct aircraft to areas of interest.

Combined, these measures represent one of the most effective maritime surveillance systems to safeguard our waters and protect life at sea – and they're about to get tougher! The Health of the Oceans initiative announced in 2007 calls for more flying hours and enhanced surveillance missions.

All of these measures are being taken to enhance the safety and environmental protection of our waterways.

Source: www.newscanada.com
Visit our dog's Blog at: www.frameyourpets.com

The cold, hard facts about surviving in cold water

(NC)—Did you know that cold water takes heat from our body twenty-five times faster than air? When you are in water, your body's ability to exchange heat with the environment reaches its highest level. This is why cold water is so dangerous.

Even if you are in top shape and are able to swim through the roughest waters, you can still die from cold-water shock.

Knowing how cold water affects our body and how to reduce its effects is critical. One way to increase your chances of survival is to wear a lifejacket. A lifejacket will keep you afloat as you try to gain control of your breathing.

Some lifejackets are even designed with thermal protection to reduce the risk of cold water shock. Next time you head out on the water, be aware of the dangers and wear a lifejacket – it could save your life. Other acceptable forms include: proof of boating safety training prior to April 1, 1999 or a completed Rental Boat Safety Checklist.

Transport Canada's requirement for recreational boaters to carry a proof of competency is being phased in over a ten-year period. When do you need a proof of competency?

• Now, anyone born after April 1, 1983.

• Now, anyone operating a motorized pleasure craft less than 4 metres (including personal watercraft).

• By September 15, 2009, all operators of motorized pleasure craft must obtain proof of competency, regardless of their age or length of their vessel.

If you haven't already obtained your Pleasure Craft Operator Card, Transport Canada recommends taking a boating safety course from an accredited course provider and passing a test at the end of the course. A course, while not mandatory, is a small investment that has a big payoff: it will help you to be more aware of boating safety practices, prevention measures, and practical strategies to reduce risks.

Remember that boating safety is a life long commitment. Over time visitors realized while passing through that it was a nice place to relax away from the crowds of Cancun but with the same quality beaches and turquoise waters.

Today Playa del Carmen, or "Playa" as it's known to the locals, is the center of the Riviera Maya concept. Playa is now a stop for several cruise ships which dock to allow their vacationers to take advantage of its shopping and quality restaurants on its world renowned “Quinta Avenida”, or Fifth Avenue.

The center of all tourist activity in Playa del Carmen, Fifth Avenue is a pedestrian walkway located just one block inland from the beach which is lined with boutique hotels, shops, bars, and restaurants. Here you will discover real Mexican hospitality combined with authentic Italian restaurants, British Pubs, German Biergartens and hip cosmopolitan lounges.

The famous energetic nightlife of Playa del Carmen captivates and enchants all comers. The streets, clubs and bars are always alive with all types of music and entertainment. It's a carnival-like atmosphere where you can find mariachi bands, belly dancers, stilt walkers, live Cuban music, reggae, hip-hop, lounge, rock, and blues all adding to the eclectic bohemian ambiance found in Playa del Carmen.

Playa's central location makes it convenient to visit all the sights and adventures the region has to offer. With almost 200 miles of coastline, the Palmetto State offers diversity for families and couples and parties of all shapes and sizes to take in the sun and fun year-round, with winter months an especially good time for great deals.

The best place to start the search for great deals for sun and surf is at www.DiscoverSouthCarolina.com, the state's official tourism site. Check out the Hot Deals link there for the latest deals from the coast. Other good places to surf the Net for deals are at Myrtle Beach's official tourism site at www.visitmybeach.com and Hilton Head Island's at www.hiltonhead.org. Same thing with that most charming and historic of southern destinations, Charleston, at www.charlestoncvb.com.

Myrtle Beach, of course, includes a wide range of bright lights and stage shows, inexpensive to high-end oceanfront hotels and thousands of places to eat, not to mention golf courses galore, from national championship links to more than 50 fun and elaborate miniature golf layouts.

Examples of high-end values at particularly good off-season prices include the new Island Vista (www.islandvista.com) and newly re-done Kingston Plantation. (www.kingstonplantation.com)

Charleston is an historical treasure but also the center of an area that includes a range of public and private beaches such as the county-owned beaches at Folly Beach (a particularly fun and funky place) and Beachwalker County Park right outside the gates of upscale Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Wild Dunes on the Isle of Palms also is a private resort that markets high-end stays at family-friendly prices (www.wilddunes.com).

On Hilton Head, a deliberately low-key, leafy retreat, check out deals at Palmetto Dunes (www.palmettodunes.com), for example, and off the island in the historic, laid-back Beaufort area, check out Fripp Island (www.frippislandresort.com), a family-friendly, self-contained island with a wide range of dining, condo and beachfront home, pool, golf and other offerings.

Of special appeal to moderate budgets are South Carolina's state parks. There are four on the coast: Myrtle Beach, which has campsites, apartments, cabins and a fishing pier; Huntington Beach, with campsites, a jetty and the unique Atalaya castle; Edisto Beach, with campsites oceanfront and in the maritime forest, cabins on a marsh, and miles of trail; and Hunting Island, adjacent to Fripp Island, with its cabins, camping, trails, maritime forest, fishing pier and historic lighthouse, the only one of its kind in South Carolina.

Reservations at all these parks can be made online at www.SouthCarolinaParks.com, which is the place to go for checking out the frequently updated Hot Deals link.

Source: www.newscanada.com
Visit our website at: www.thenewsleader.ca

Airline makes flight to Myrtle Beach a bit more direct

(NC)—MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sixty miles of sunny beach with more than 100 golf courses, 80,000 hotel and condo rooms and 1,600 restaurants is now even easier to get to for Canadian snowbirds.

Direct Air (www.visitdirectair.com) has added direct flights to Myrtle Beach International Airport from Niagara Falls and Plattsburgh, N.Y., increasing air access from two of Canada's largest metropolitan areas – Montreal and Toronto – to South Carolina's Grand Strand.

“The airport out of Niagara Falls made the whole trip so much easier. There have been no hassles with luggage and connections and airports,” Toronto-area resident Dan Mullally said on a recent trip. “A quick drive to Niagara Falls and you are in Myrtle Beach in two hours, and that makes all the difference in the world.”

There now are seven commercial airlines offering flights to Myrtle Beach from 16 other American cities, too.

Winter golf has long been a major attraction here, for financial and aesthetic reasons alike.

“The quality of the 100-plus golf courses in Myrtle Beach combined with the great value that they present to golfers are two of the principal reasons that Canadians visit us year after year,” said Bill Golden, president of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday (www.golfholiday.com).

“And when you compare the average daily high temperatures in Canada in February and March to the 60- and 70-degree days we enjoy along the Grand Strand in those months, it's perhaps no surprise that we're such a popular destination for Canadians every year,” he said.

Just to make sure they know they're welcome, each March for more than 40 years, the Grand Strand celebrates Can-Am Week, a series of events intended as an extra bit of southern hospitality to the annual influx of visitors from up north.

Not that there's any shortage of things to do. Joining the beach shops, restaurants and other traditional downtown favourites such as the Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum is a number of major developments spreading out from the original central city.

They include Broadway at the Beach, anchored by the Hard Rock Café and Ripley's Aquarium, Barefoot Landing and its Alabama Theatre, Fantasy Harbour and much more.

The range of shopping choices also has grown sharply in the past few years. For instance, Colonial Mall now boasts a 100,000-square-foot Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World. There are more than 300 outlet center stores and the Coastal Grand, South Carolina's largest mall, has 1.5 million square feet under one roof.

The old Myrtle Beach Air Force base property also has a new look with the recent opening of Market Common, an upscale living/shopping/dining development.

More information on Myrtle Beach is available at www.visitmybeach.com.

Source: www.newscanada.com
Visit our website at: www.thenewsleader.ca

Kiawah's Ocean Course to host 2012 PGA, but no need to wait

(NC)—KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Two decades after it burst onto the international golf scene as the host of the Ryder Cup, the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island is preparing to again be the world capital of golf.

The famed layout along the ocean south of Charleston will be the host of the 2012 PGA Championship. Of course, visitors don't have to wait until then to see the layout that hosted the 1991 Ryder Cup. The course is open year round to the public and is always in tournament condition.

“Because of Pete Dye's outstanding design, there will be a limited amount of work that will need to be done to get the course ready for the tournament,” said Brian Gerard, director of golf at Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

“Plus, it is our policy to keep the course in tournament condition at all times,” he said.

Hospitality packages for the tournament are expected to go on sale in early 2010 by the PGA, but visitors in the meantime can check out the Ocean Course and all the surroundings of the luxurious resort island year-round.

The Ocean Course, recently named America's toughest golf course by Golf Digest magazine, is one of a family of high-end golf courses on Kiawah Island, a pristine, 10-mile barrier island about 20 miles outside of Charleston. The resort also features a world-class tennis facility, beach house and condo rentals and The Sanctuary, a super luxurious hotel and spa.

More information is available at www.kiawahresort.com.

Source: www.newscanada.com
Visit our Pet Information Blog at: www.frameyourpets.info

Get an adult vacation – even with the kids

By Jane Stokes
(NC)—Not everyone gets a break on a family vacation. Parents, especially moms, still have to care for their newborns, supervise their toddlers, watch their school age rascals, and keep at least one eye on the activities of their teens and 'tweens. The only way a parent can actually rest and rejuvenate is to choose a resort that does all this supervising for you.

“We say, start with www.clubmed.ca,” says Christine Dicaire, spokesperson for the vacation company. “For example, at the totally refurbished, Club Med Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, even infants from four months old enjoy programs with fully trained professionals. It's a new facility we call, Baby Club Med.

“This utterly doting service for babies gives parents any amount of freedom they seek. Or, if you have 2- and 3-year-olds, the Petit Club Med engages them in a full array of age-specific activities, and the Mini Club Med does the same for children aged 4 to 10.”

Teens and tweens are fully supervised too in Club Med Passworld, the coolest 'club' of them all.

“So parents beware,” Dicaire continued, “when you consider your teen's excitement over unlimited sports, and watersports, plus the excursions, hiking, picnics, movies-on-the-beach – and the one-of-a-kind specialty programs like film-making, acting, singing and other performance arts – don't be too surprised if you never see them again!”

And you?

Indeed, for all adults, Club Med is legendary for its barefoot mixing and mingling – and for its upscale entertainment, recreation, sports instruction, menu choice, and especially for its late night fun. Spend your days sipping pina coladas under swaying palms on Punta Cana's bleach-white beach. Or, simply disappear for hours on end. The new Spa here features an infinity pool, a Zen lounge, and it has eight treatment rooms, including a secluded one for a couple's massage.
Oversize Suites
And if by chance you are a family that requires a lot of space, ask to be accommodated in a Family Suite. These 775 square-foot, oceanfront bungalows feature two bedrooms, premium amenities and services, access to an exclusive infinity pool, and a 95 square-foot deck.

Says Christine Dicaire: “You may think your family needs a lot of space, but the excitement of sharing your own private place on the beach, actually promotes togetherness.”

Source: www.newscanada.com
Visit our Blog 'From Love Chunk To Love Hunk' at www.lovechunk.info

Enhance your mounted TV with snap-on accessories

By Cynthia Brooks
(NC)—TV wall mounts offer a modern solution for displaying flat-screen televisions that goes beyond simply setting it on a piece of furniture.

Tilting and full-motion mounts enable flexibility for the user to adjust the viewing angle. Depending on the type of mount being used, many mounts can tilt up and down, swivel from side to side, pan across the room and extend, sometimes up to a foot or more from the wall. Their low-profile design is also appealing to many consumers because it further accentuates an already thin TV.

Mount manufacturer Sanus Systems is now offering even more options for flat-screen owners who mount their TVs with a number of new add-on accessories that easily snap onto the mount and remain hidden behind the display.

What Sanus is marketing as “Click Fit” technology on its Vision Mount models LT25 and LL22 wall mounts allows accessories such as surge suppressors, electrical outlet covers and HDMI inputs to be positioned directly behind the TV. The products attach onto a special channel that is extruded into the mount's wall plate. No tools are required for installation, and the accessories snap off easily if the user wants to remove them later.

“Consumers often want to safeguard their TVs from power surges and lightning strikes, especially those who spend a good deal of money on a new flat screen,” says Ryan Hagberg from Sanus. “A surge suppressor is a common add-on component but it can be difficult to find a place to put it when the TV is hanging on a wall. This is what thousands of Canadian golfers' experience each year when they choose a golf vacation in the tropical paradise of the Mexican Caribbean.

As an avid golfer, Ottawa's John Hardie loathes that fateful day in autumn when he finally has to put away his trustee golf clubs for yet another frigid Canadian winter. Two years ago Hardie decided, like thousands who share his passion, to extend his golf season one more week on a tropical golf vacation with a group of his friends in Cancun.

“We chose a golf package with Real Resorts at The Royal Playa Del Carmen,” said Hardie. “It really is the best of both worlds. We had unlimited golf every day and real luxury accommodations at night with top of the line food and drinks. It's become our annual winter golf haven for my group for sure.”

In Cancun, some of the world's most renowned golf course designers have teamed up with the surrounding lush nature and created a selection of nine legendary courses. Cancun course designs have come from some of the game's greatest names, including: Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones, Jr., Robert Von Hagge, Isao Aoki, Greg Norman and P.B. Dye.

Golfers of every skill level enjoy championship golf courses where the greens seemingly merge into the ocean and the dramatic fairways offer challenges at every turn. In fact, golf courses in the Mexican Caribbean meet the highest standards set by professional tournaments and expert golfers. And from the pro shop to the 19th hole, you can take advantage of familiar golfing amenities such as club, shoe and cart rental, practice areas, putting greens, course assistants, and lessons or clinics from club pros.

Hotels such as Real Resorts offer golf packages with the accommodation of your choice and exclusive inclusions such as unlimited greens fees.

“You can perfect your game by day and unwind in luxury by night,” added Jeannette Vasconcelos, Marketing Manager of world-renowned Real Resorts in Cancun. “After their game, golfers return to the comfort of our resorts and pamper themselves with massages and treatments in the hotel Spa and then enjoy a superb meal in one of the hotel's award-winning a la carte restaurants.”

Whether you are a seasoned professional or just a weekend novice, the Mexican Caribbean offers an opportunity to enjoy this royal game in tropical splendor. And it's no surprise as Cancun is an enchanting Mexican Caribbean destination that combines the old and the new, the tranquil and the lively and has everything a couple needs for a majestic celebration of their love.

“From wedding consultants and honeymoon packages to spa treatments and unlimited entertainment options, Cancun takes care of a couple's every need,” said Jeannette Vasconcelos, Marketing Manager of world-renowned Real Resorts in Cancun. “And, when you add our beautiful surroundings – the turquoise sea of the Caribbean, the lush jungle that surrounds us – we're a package that's hard for any couple to resist.”

According to the Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau, the number of couples from Canada who get married in Cancun steadily increases each year. And it's no wonder. Many of the larger hotels have their own wedding coordinators and offer services ranging from a simple Cancun beach wedding ceremony to a full-blown event with a reception, musicians, dancing, and honeymoon packages.

For example, Real Resorts has created all-inclusive wedding and honeymoon packages suitable to fit many tastes. “Real Resorts weddings are special, whether they're nestled in the heart of Cancun or Playa del Carmen,” Vasconcelos added.

The Royal in Cancun, Gran Caribe Real Cancun, The Royal Playa del Carmen and Gran Porto Real Playa del Carmen resorts all offer packages that can be customized with enhancements or couples can work individually with a wedding planner to create a unique ceremony and reception.

In fact, Real Resorts packages offer free wedding coordination services. “This ensures a seamless transition from when you make your booking to the final touches on the day,” she said. “This service is especially useful for couples when organizing a wedding from afar.”

This was the deciding factor for Toronto's Emma Mclean, a self-proclaimed anti-bride, when she chose a Real Resorts wedding. “What I loved most about my wedding at the Royal in Cancun was that my wedding coordinator took care of everything…quite literally one-stop shopping. She emailed me flower choices, menu selections, photo packages and even music options.”

“Our resorts' wedding planner will even coordinate the legal documents required by Mexican law,” explained Vasconcelos. These include original or certified copies of birth certificates, valid passports and the tourist card received upon entering Cancun, and blood tests taken two working days before the wedding in Cancun.

The romantic wedding and honeymoon packages at Real Resorts can include red carpet ceremonies with beautiful decorated gazebos, landscaped gardens and flowers, three course dinner receptions under the stars with a live Mariachi Band, massages, spa treatments and champagne breakfasts in bed for the wedding couple.

After their special day happy couples can relax and enjoy their honeymoon at the resort while their guests enjoy an extended vacation in stunning Mexico. With heavy concern over greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution stays top-of-mind, but equally damaging to the environment can be aquatic pollution. Recent headlines demonstrate that water pollution remains a grave concern, with oil spills being amongst the most potentially damaging incidents.

For example, at least 26 million gallons of oil enter North American waters annually due to daily human activities. Even Canada has its fair share of oil spills such as recent spills in Alberta. In addition to spills from ships and oil processing operations, cooking and motor oils can also be harmful to wildlife.

But on the brighter side, there are leading programs such as the Canadian Oiled Wildlife Rescue Academy (COWRA) that can provide swift help when nature needs a hand. Since 2006, COWRA has hosted yearly workshops across Canada to educate and prepare wildlife rescue teams for future oil spills.

Founded in 2005, COWRA began its good work when the Canadian Arm of the Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research Inc. (TSBRR) and Dawn Dishwashing Liquid entered into a three-year partnership – with a portion of Dawn's sales helping to fund COWRA. For over 25 years, Dawn has been dedicated to saving marine wildlife. From the shores of Alaska to the Galapagos Islands, Dawn dishwashing liquid is widely used for the gentle cleaning of oiled birds by wildlife rescuers around the world.

In refining rescue methods, wildlife rescuers found that one staple household/kitchen product worked best for helping to save the birds. Dishwashing liquid was discovered to gently remove the toughest of oils from feathers. Animal rescue groups choose Dawn dishwashing liquid because it has the power to remove greasy oil while remaining gentle on delicate feathers and skin.

"Being prepared and properly equipped to handle oil spills is crucial to the success of saving wildlife," says Tom Dunbar, Canadian coordinator, TSBRR. "With Dawn's support we increase the preparedness of our rescue teams during oil spills."

Oiled birds instinctively preen their feathers. When they do, toxins are ingested, which damage internal organs. COWRA teaches participants current techniques for cleaning, medically treating and rehabilitating oiled wildlife in preparation for potential oil spills. Since 2006, COWRA has trained over 110 expert wildlife rehabilitators, including approximately 40 veterinarians and rehabilitators in Edmonton this year alone.

"I was thrilled at the variety of topics that were presented at this workshop," says Kristin Arnot, of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton. "This workshop made me much more confident and gave me some great ideas. No matter if you are just starting out washing a few birds or you deal with large scale spills, there was valuable information for everyone. The hands-on training was excellent."

Tom Dunbar points out that, "It is essential to leave helping the wildlife to only the trained experts, and these are the people who should be called in the event injured wildlife is found".

As rescue techniques become more advanced, wildlife rescue worldwide will be more successful. With Dawn's continued support, rescue teams can effectively save global marine wildlife – one bird at a time.

Source: www.newscanada.com
Visit us online at: www.thenewsleader.ca

Tips to prevent snowmobile accidents and fatalities

(NC)—Snowmobiling is a sport enjoying immense popularity. There are currently more than 700,000 registered snowmobiles in Canada and more than 161,000 kilometres of snowmobile trails. Follow these safety tips from Transport Canada for a safe and enjoyable snowmobiling experience. You have it in your power to travel safely by snowmobile:

Before you set out:

- Inform others of your destination and estimated arrival time.

- Inspect your snowmobile for mechanical integrity.

- Wear suitable clothing to prevent hypothermia – remember that children are particularly susceptible to the cold.

- Carry first aid and survival kits.

- Check local avalanche conditions in avalanche-prone areas at www.avalanche.ca.

On the trail:

- Ride within your capabilities.

- Use snowmobile trails whenever and wherever practical.

- Stay on the right side of the trail.

- Reduce speed in unfamiliar territory.

- Exercise care when crossing roadways and railway tracks.

At night:

- Slow down! Your headlight limits how far ahead you can see. The slower you are travelling, the less distance you need to stop.

- Avoid driving along road shoulders where lights from either snowmobiles or vehicles can cause confusion.

Over lakes and rivers:

- Be aware of ice conditions and, if in doubt, check with local authorities or your local club.

- Wear flotation-type clothing.

Never:

- Never drive a snowmobile if you are impaired by alcohol or drugs. "Don't drink and drive" applies to snowmobiles as to any motor vehicle.

- Never ride on railway tracks.

- Never ride alone.

- Never leave children unsupervised with "kiddie" snowmobiles.

- Never leave young children alone in cutters.

- Never travel with babies.

Source: www.newscanada.com
Visit us online at: www.thenewsleader.ca

Squeeze an extra 100 kilometres out of a tank of gas this winter

(NC) – Follow these tips for fuel efficient driving from Natural Resources Canada and make fewer trips to the gas station this winter:

- Avoid quick starts, hard stops and aggressive driving – this can increase your fuel consumption by up to 39 per cent;

- Drive at the posted speed limit – decreasing your cruising speed from 120 km/h to 100 km/h will decrease fuel consumption by approximately 20 per cent;

- Don't idle – Idling for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel and produces more CO2 compared to restarting your engine

- Use cruise control - on dry, flat, wide-open highways, use cruise control to help improve fuel efficiency by maintaining an even speed;

- Take the most fuel-efficient route - routes with fewer stop lights and less traffic may use less fuel than shorter routes with more stop lights and heavy traffic;

- Maintain your vehicle properly – a poorly maintained vehicle consumes more fuel, produces higher levels of emissions, requires expensive repairs, and has a low resale value;

- Measure your tire pressure once a month - A single tire under-inflated by just 56 kilopascals (eight pounds per square inch) can increase your vehicle's fuel consumption by four per cent;

- Calculate your mileage – Set your odometer every time you fill up and challenge yourself to get better and better readings. Here are some tips from Transport Canada to help you avoid unnecessary delays at the airport and to help you have a safe, secure and enjoyable trip:

- Luggage – Find out how many pieces of luggage you're allowed to take with you. Checked and carry-on baggage limits vary by airline and destination. Identify all your bags and do not use your home address or business title on luggage tags. Pack your own bags and never leave them unattended. Keep your eyes on your bags at all times.

- Liquids and gels - Liquids, gels and aerosols in containers with a capacity of 100 ml/grams (3.4 oz.) or less are permitted through pre-board security screening as long as they fit comfortably in one clear, closed, re-sealable, one litre plastic bag. Passengers may bring on board baby formula, baby food, milk and juice in amounts exceeding 100 ml/100g when accompanying children under two. Medicines in liquid, gel or aerosol form are also permitted in amounts exceeding the 100 ml/gram limit. Prescription medicines should bear the passenger's name and be accompanied by a doctor's note. Travellers should also be aware that liquid, gel, or aerosol duty-free purchases (e.g. alcohol, cosmetics) over the 100ml/gram limit should be placed in checked baggage as they are not permitted through pre-board screening points in Canada.

- Identification – For all flights to, from and within Canada, anyone over 18 must have one piece of government-issued photo I.D. (such as a driver's licence) or two non-photo government-issued I.D. For international travel, don't forget to bring your passport.

- Child safety - Parents are encouraged to use an approved child restraint system (car seat) when travelling with their infants or children. (check with airline for specifics).

- Arrive early - Get to the airport in plenty of time to print tickets, check baggage and go through security.

- Sharp objects – Make sure there are no prohibited items in your carry-on luggage such as scissors or knives. Pack them in your checked luggage.

- Electronic devices - Make sure electronic devices such as cell phones, laptop computers and portable or electronic games are charged and ready to turn on for inspection at security.

- Safety and security at the airport – It's against the law to joke about hijackings or bombings. Never accept parcels or letters from strangers to deliver to your destination. Never carry anything onto a plane for anyone else.

- Safety and security during the flight - Listen to the safety briefings before takeoff and find your emergency exits. Certain electronic devices may not be allowed during the flight. Check with your crew. Follow their instructions at all times and respect them and the other passengers. It is illegal to behave in a threatening manner towards others on board the flight. Drinking juice or water during your flight - instead of coffee or alcohol - will help keep you hydrated. Try doing seated leg exercises throughout the flight to help prevent stiffness.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Natural selection: evolution of the golf ball

(NC)—The most recent developments in golf ball technology seem a world away from the feather-stuffed, hand-stitched balls first used over 500 years ago – and so they should.

The first golf balls were made of everything from feathers to the rubbery sap of the tropical Gutta tree. Later developments saw golf ball cores filled with rubber, compressed air, cork, and metal. What remains the same, though, is the goal has always been to increase accuracy and distance – an elusive plan when early balls were made from feathers, sap or animal hides.

Modern technology has not only made it easier to hit the golf ball longer, but also accuracy can be improved by using the correct type of ball on the course – and for many years, that choice included either a two- or three-piece ball.

"If you wanted spin and control you had to give up distance and play a three-piece spin ball. If you wanted distance you had to give up spin and control and play a hard two-piece ball," says Steve Ogg, vice president of golf ball research for Callaway Golf.

But Ogg, a former aeronautical engineer who now works to maximize the performance and accuracy of Callaway's golf balls using science, says things have changed. His team was behind the development of Callaway's new Tour i and Tour ix balls, which use industry-leading four-piece construction and a dual core that allows the ball to achieve distance off the tee while still enabling spin around the green. Ogg's team optimized the Tour i ball for maximum short-game control, while the Tour ix was created with both distance and control in mind.

"For maximum distance you want the highest speed, a high launch angle, relatively low spin and good aerodynamics," says Ogg.

Increasingly, touring professionals are using the four-piece Tour i or Tour ix balls to improve their performance at the world's top golf tournaments. Golf great Phil Mickelson has been quoted as saying that the Tour i and Tour ix balls have had the greatest impact on the game of golf, "more than any other piece of equipment in the history of the game – even more than steel shafts."

Source: www.newscanada.com

Its Hip to be Square

(NC)—They say that practice makes perfect, but nothing says that golfers of all abilities can't turn to technology to get that much needed edge over their competition, and one of the latest advances to hit the market is the once unimaginable square-shaped driver.

Introduced to the market in 2007 by such companies as Callaway Golf and its revolutionary FT-i driver, the concept of this new shape was both smart and simple: push the weight back from the club-head face to the back corners of a square shape to increase moment of inertia, or MOI. The higher the moment of inertia, the less likely the clubhead will twist at impact when striking a golf ball, resulting in longer, straighter shots. The result of this technology speaks for itself with over 30 million golfers in North America deciding to go square.

"Technology helps the typical high handicapper first," said Callaway Canada's Manager of Golf Education, Barry Wallis, when asked about the square-head phenomenon. "Pros already get the most out their equipment, but even they have been changing over. Top tour players such as Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson regularly carry a square driver. However, players who play 15 to 20 rounds a year will benefit the most from this technology."

Billed as the smartest club on the course, Callaway Golf recently announced that it will bringing in the next generation of the cubic driver to market with its FT-iq, available in the fall. The FT-iq has a lower centre of gravity than the FT-i, producing a more dynamic ball flight and also features Hyperbolic Face Technology to promote higher ball speeds off the club face.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Labour Day? Don't put those clubs away

(NC)—While many golfers think about storing their clubs after Labour Day, fall is actually the perfect time to experience another great way to enjoy the game. Golf in autumn is much more relaxed for a variety of reasons, and can turn out to be some of your most enjoyable rounds of the season.

As the leaves offer up their stunning show of colour, fall sees fewer people on the course and provides a more comfortable temperature to enjoy the game. Best of all, after spending quality time on the links throughout summer's hotter months, your swing is likely more comfortable, practiced and peaking in fall.

However, there are several things to consider when making the transition from playing in summer to fall – everything from apparel to equipment. When selecting your fall golf garb, remember that dressing in layers is the best way to adapt to fall's quickly changing conditions, says Barry Wallis, Manager of Golf Education for Callaway Golf Canada. He also offers up this advice:

"Wear no less than three layers to the course during fall and spring," says Wallis. "Start with a breathable, insulating base layer, add an intermediate, warmer layer and top it off with a wind-resistant or waterproof layer, depending on the conditions."

Wallis, a seasoned CPGA professional also recommends wearing a blend of microfibre polyester and cotton as a base or intermediate layer.

Cooler temperatures can also have a significant effect on equipment, making golf balls feel harder and your club's shaft less flexible, changing the launch conditions of your ball. Wallis recommends equipping yourself with a lighter, more flexible shaft and softer golf ball to maximize your game in cooler weather.

"Callaway's introduction of I-MIX technology certainly helps golfers adapt to not just to course conditions, but weather conditions as well," added Wallis. "I-MIX, an interchangeable driver system allows players to change their driver heads and shafts based on that day's conditions, which is really great for our unpredictable fall weather. Coupling a more flexible shaft and using a softer feeling ball like Callaway's Tour ix will make your swing more responsive in fall."

Source: www.newscanada.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://myleisurenews.blogspot.com/2008/09/labour-day-dont-put-those-clubs-away.html' title='Labour Day? Consider these tips for handling your money when travelling.

Think Ahead
"You'll require enough funds to cover your needs," advises chartered accountant Gary Fitchett, president, IBI Corporation in Port Perry. "This depends on how long you're away and where you are travelling.

"Always make sure you carry some of the local currency – don't plan on cashing traveller's cheques in the airport when you arrive. Depending on the country, consider taking some U.S. dollars. It's still the universal currency and, even though it's less in favour now, can be used anywhere. Ensure your credit card limits are sufficient – is enough available for an emergency?"

Think Security
"Take precautions," adds chartered accountant Sandra McLeod, owner, Expedia Cruise Ship Centres-Etobicoke, in Toronto.

"Advise your bank and credit card company that you are travelling, so they are alert to any unusual activity. Take a maximum of two credit cards, and make copies before you go, leaving one at home and taking another with you. Keep it in a separate place, and call your bank immediately if your card is stolen or compromised."

To use your debit card outside North America, you will need the same four-digit PIN that you use at home – make sure you have enough funds to cover withdrawals. While traveller's cheques are secure and replaceable, they may not be accepted everywhere.

Think Insurance
People usually think of insurance when travelling for pleasure, not business. "The fact is, you always need it," advises McLeod.

"Paying on the spot for emergencies is expensive. Find out what your credit card or employee coverage includes, such as trip cancellation or interruption, and emergency medical. If you are not completely covered, purchase traveller's insurance and take the policy number with you. If you travel extensively and have no employee insurance coverage, consider purchasing annual travel insurance – it's more economical."

Think Safeguards
"Always be aware of your surroundings and avoid unnecessary risks," continues Fitchett. "Some countries are known for lax security and crafty pickpockets. Make sure your handbag has zippered pockets, your wallet is secure (not stashed in your hip pocket), and consider wearing a money belt. When using your credit card, make sure the merchant makes only the two required copies, one for each of you, and don't leave your cards lying around. Store your traveller's cheques and cash in separate places, so you always have an emergency backup.

Cash to Go?
"It may be convenient to get cash at your hotel as long as you're prepared to pay a premium," Fitchett explains. And, while many developing countries have black markets where you may get a better rate, it's usually better to convert your funds at a bank.

"You can be easily cheated on the black market," agrees McLeod. "Only carry the money you need and store the rest in a safety deposit box (you can often rent one at the front desk). Then what? Enjoy your trip."

More information on this topic is available from a chartered accountant.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Make an un-lasting impact this summer

(NC)—Carpooling, packing lunches in reusable containers and composting - all are small measures that can be incorporated into a daily routine for making a long-term difference to preserve the environment. As summer approaches, kids and adults alike will shift into vacation mode and start to enjoy Canada's great outdoors. Along with the fun comes responsibility for potential impact on the environment.

This year, Toshiba of Canada and Scouts Canada have teamed up on a program called Leave No Trace. Here are the seven principles of the program that can help you minimize your environmental footprint outdoors.

1. Plan ahead and prepare – Repackage food to minimize waste.

2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces – Protect riparian areas by camping at least 70 metres from lakes and streams.

3. Dispose of waste properly – Pack out all trash, leftover food and litter.

4. Leave what you find – Preserve the past. Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them.

5. Minimize campfire impacts – Keep fires small. Only use sticks from the ground that can be broken by hand. Burn all wood and coals to ash, put out campfires completely and then scatter cool ashes.

6. Respect wildlife – Never feed animals. Feeding wildlife damages their health, alters natural behaviours and exposes them to predators and other dangers.

7. Be considerate of others – Respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience. Let nature's sounds prevail.

Learn more about the Leave No Trace program at www.scouts.ca/LNT.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Outdoor entertaining: Making the most of Canada's shortest season

(NC)—Summers are always too short and many Canadians do their best to stretch out the season by packing in as much activity as possible. Often, this means hosting a backyard party or a barbeque at the cottage with friends. Here are a few tips to make sure that your summertime soiree is a success:

• Choose a Party Theme. Will it be a Garden Party or a Beach Bash? Whatever you decide, decorate and choose your food and drink accordingly for a party to remember.

• Send out Eco-Friendly Invites. Use a free online invitation service to invite your friends and keep track of your guest list without affecting a single tree.

• Set up an Outdoor Survival Station. Keep a table stocked with sunscreen and bug repellent so that everyone can enjoy the outdoor party.

• Crank up the Summertime Tunes. Hook up a Sirius Satellite Radio with its portable boombox to play continuous commercial-free music to keep your guests dancing all night.

• Light up the Night. Use paper lanterns to decorate your yard so the party can keep going even when the sun goes down.

And the most important thing to remember when planning a summertime party is to have fun. This is the most laid back season of the year, so make sure you are organized before your guests arrive so you can have a good time once they do.

More information is available online at www.sirius.ca.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Hit the open road this summer: Great tips for Canadian road trips

(NC)—The summer road trip is a Canadian tradition. Whether you're taking the classic cross-Canada trek or just a day trip to a nearby town, you'll need some preparation, a sense of adventure and most importantly – a great soundtrack. Here are some ideas to help keep your trip fun and stress-free while keeping your eyes on the road:

• Safety First. Remember to get a tune up for your vehicle so you can avoid car trouble while on holidays. Don't forget to pack an emergency road kit including blankets and water.

• Don't Rush It. Make sure that you allow enough time for impromptu detours and stops along the way. That way, an unscheduled stop at Sudbury's Giant Nickel or Drumheller's World's Largest Dinosaur won't throw off your schedule.

• Map Your Musical Road Trip. Make sure your car is hooked up with Sirius Satellite Radio so you can listen to a wide variety of commercial-free music while on the road. For fun, try matching different music genres to different parts of Canada to create your own unique Canadian soundtrack.
• Eat Locally. Instead of stopping at the nearest fast food chain when you need to take a break, try a local restaurant or diner.

• Leave the Stress at Home. Make the most of your drive time with your fellow passengers and keep topics of conversation fun and stress-free. This is your vacation, so enjoy it.

More information is available online at www.sirius.ca.

- News Canada

Healthy backpack snacks for families on-the-go

(NC)—Whether planning to take a day trip to the local park or embark upon a cross-country family vacation, Canadians are getting ready to hit the trails this summer. For many, being away from home often creates challenges when it comes to eating healthily while on-the-go. The solution? Ensure that you are prepared with snacks that not only tempt the taste buds but also fuel the body for summertime adventures.

"Snacking is important for keeping energy levels up and spirits high, especially when families are active and on the move," says registered dietitian, Sue Mah. "Instead of reaching for the pre-packaged snacks or candy while on the road, parents should pack snacks that are not only flavourful but also able to fill active children's tummies, not to mention their own."

Whether a backpacker, day-hiker, canoeist, car camper, or any other type of outdoor enthusiast, Mah, in partnership with the Peanut Bureau of Canada, offers the following tips for healthy snacking while on the trails:

Plan ahead – With a little preparation, you can plan to pack healthy options rather than stopping at convenience stores and drive-throughs where less healthy choices can easily sneak into your backpack. Grapes, cherries, apple slices, and peanuts all make great take-along snacks.

Portability – Packing snacks that will fit well into a backpack or small cooler bag is important. Use re-sealable, airtight containers to help keep food fresh. Think about taking along single serving size versions of snacks in wax paper, twisting each end to close, ideal for each family member to carry their own.

Food safety – Consider packing snacks that won't spoil easily in the sun and outdoor heat (such as peanuts, peanut butter sandwiches). Try freezing a tetrapak of juice. Not only will it be a cold refreshing beverage but it will also serve as a freezer pack to keep food items cold during the trek.

Variety – Depending on the length of your travels, take along a variety of snacks that can be eaten throughout the day. Including an assortment of healthy treats for the trails not only will deliver the nutrition needed to maintain your energy but also ensure that no one gets bored with their snacks.

"Just because you are heading out for the day doesn't mean you need to leave nutrition behind," says Mah. "Stay energized by taking along peanuts in re-sealable containers or sprinkling them into a pre-made trail mix. Peanuts provide a sure-fire way for families and those on-the-go to boost their energy. And all you need is a handful to keep hunger at bay."

Information on peanuts and recipe ideas can be found online at www.peanutbureau.ca.

- News Canada

First time backpackers: Be prepared

(NC)—For novice backpackers, stepping out into a wilderness setting for the first time is an entirely new, nearly foreign experience. That is why is it so important to take a few moments and familiarize yourself with some of the basic ground rules of outdoor exploration.

Bob Abrames, voyageur and outdoor expert, and Energizer offer the following tips:

• Pick a partner: It's safest to hike or camp with at least one companion. If you'll be entering a remote area, your group should have a minimum of four people. If you'll be going into an area that is unfamiliar to you, take along someone who knows the area or at least speak with those who do before you set out.

• Don't forget the essentials: Ensure you pack a map, compass, extra water, emergency food, first aid kit, proper lighting such as an Energizer LED head light, proper clothing, a pocket knife and a signaling device—be it a whistle or flare.

• Know your equipment: Make sure you know what everything does and how it operates before you leave on your trip.

• Always be prepared for the unexpected: Roaring wind, storms, searing heat – the good and the bad that nature has to offer are always present in the backcountry, and can be difficult to predict. If you get caught in unexpected weather conditions, find shelter until the worst passes, and try to keep clothes, sleeping bags and other important gear dry at all times.

• Respect the land: Be diligent and appreciate the fragile qualities of wilderness lands. Leave rocks, flowers and natural features undisturbed.

"Backpacking has become an increasingly popular way to travel," says Abrames. "It allows you an almost unlimited level of flexibility, but safety is an important factor when planning any outdoor excursion."

More information on portable lighting is available online at www.energizer.ca.

- News Canada

Get your antioxidants the cool way this summer…in iced tea

(NC)—A growing number of health-conscious Canadians are looking for beverage options that fit within their healthy lifestyle but don't skimp on taste. Many of these trendsetters are rediscovering an age-old favourite – tea, in all its goodness.

Most people are aware that a hot cup of tea contains antioxidants, but not everyone realizes that iced tea – when brewed from real tea leaves – also contains natural antioxidants called flavonoids.

Why all the fuss about antioxidants?

Increasing scientific research has shown that antioxidants in tea, fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet. Antioxidants protect the body from damage by 'free radicals'. These free radicals attack cells in the body, and may damage DNA, proteins and lipids. Antioxidants seek out and neutralize free radicals, helping the body maintain a healthy balance.

"The scientific evidence continues to mount about the numerous health benefits of drinking tea. Many scientific research studies have found many potential health attributes associated with tea," said Helene Charlebois, a registered dietitian and nutritionist. "Because of its antioxidant properties, research has found that drinking black, green or oolong tea may help to protect against cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer and help strengthen the immune system."

Just how much antioxidants can you get from iced tea? It varies from brand to brand, but Lipton White Tea with Raspberry, for example, provides 106mg of flavonoid antioxidants per 355-ml serving. One of the advantages of consuming iced tea with antioxidants is that you know with precision and consistency the exact level of antioxidants you are consuming, whereas with hot brewed tea, the antioxidant level can vary significantly from cup to cup, depending on a variety of factors such as how long the tea is brewed.

- News Canada

Patio Parties - Personalize your backyard barbecue

By J.C. Carroll

(NC)—Canadians from coast to coast could teach each other a thing or two about barbecuing.

A Leger Marketing poll reveals that more than two thirds (70%) of Canadians describe themselves as having an "adventurous" barbecue personality—and yet this confidence is expressed so differently from region to region. According to the data, barbeque aficionados across Canada would demonstrate their individual flare as follows:

• Eastern Canadians would entertain us with lots of Atlantic salmon;
• Quebec residents would prepare a feast with local game meat;
• Ontarians have perfected the art of grilling chicken and beef;
• Prairie province grillers would double your serving of the freshest grilled vegetables;
• Albertans will treat us to the succulent experience of Alberta beef; and
• British Columbia barbecue parties are at their best when Pacific salmon is on the grill.

Of course, being adventurous is not only what we cook, but how we cook it. Seasoning, in particular, can be improvised creatively. A few dashes of your favourite condiments can make your meal mouth watering. Here are some popular 'secrets' from grillers across Canada:

• Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce is often used as a secret ingredient in ground beef recipes like the burger, for example. Just add a few dashes of Lea & Perrins to your ground meat for flavour, form patties, grill, glaze and you are done.
• Diana Sauce stirred into mayonnaise makes a zesty condiment for those burgers or try it on grilled sandwiches.
• A few dashes of Lea & Perrins on fresh summer seafood is another great way to add quick, delicious flavour.
• Try this basting and dipping sauce for seafood on both the East and West coasts or anywhere in between: Blend a teaspoon of Heinz Ketchup with a teaspoon of horseradish plus a generous splash of worcestershire sauce to taste.
• HP Sauce is a very popular dip for steak, and many Canadians also rave about what it does as a baste on grilled veggies and fish.
• HP Sauce mixed with orange marmalade makes a tasty glaze for grilled chicken and pork.

So, experiment at the grill this summer and enjoy all the fresh flavours Canada has to offer.

- News Canada

Environment Watch: Protect our fragile lakes and rivers

(NC)—As Canadians, we are overtly proud of our lakes and waterways, recognizing that the abundance of this natural resource is a global privilege.

Did you know, for example: there are an estimated two million lakes in Canada, giving us more lake area than any other country in the world? The Great Lakes alone are the largest system of fresh water on earth, containing roughly 18 percent of the world's fresh surface water.

What can we do to protect this fragile resource? One important step is to use biodegradable cleaning products, like laundry detergents that quickly breakdown in our lakes and rivers. Purex has just launched an innovative breakthrough detergent called Natural Elements. It has a biodegradable formula and is reported to be as effective as their regular products.

"When polled, 88% of Canadians said they would be more likely to buy an environmentally conscious laundry detergent if made by a manufacturer or name they trust," says Ed Zello, spokesperson for the brand. "So that gives our newest Natural Elements line such a great head-start. It is biodegradable and both the bottle and cap are recyclable."

A recent Angus Reid poll reports that eight in 10 Canadians say "it's important that a detergent be biodegradable so it doesn't harm our lakes and water systems". And, 82% of women and 75% of men say: "manufacturers should try to do more for the environment".

Green products are clearly here to stay.

- News Canada

Supertasters test the good, the bad and the ugly

(NC)—Lucky for those of us who like a nice glass of wine or a strong cup of coffee there is still no machine that can match the human taste bud in separating the horrible from the divine. Rest assured that your favourite wine, coffee or herbal remedy, has likely been tested by an expert known as a supertaster.

Only about 25 per cent of the population are supertasters because they have more papillae, or taste buds, on their tongues, allowing them to work as wine and coffee tasters, chefs and even herbalists. Jim Strauss of Kamloops, B.C. is one of those supertasters. At age 57, after a heart attack and facing bypass surgery and a lifetime of drugs, he used his supertasting skills to recreate a herbal remedy passed down through generations of his family, and taught to him as a child - a formulation that he hoped would heal his failing heart. Nearly 30 years later, the remedy, which contains a complex combination of herbs including garlic, cayenne, and bilberry, has become a highly popular product in Canada, and numerous other countries.

"I continue to receive letters from all over the world from people whose lives have been improved after taking my family's products," says the retired Strauss who recovered from his heart problems without having surgery, nearly 30 years ago.

Dr. Carolyn Dean, Canadian physician and naturopath, says there is merit to using blends of herbs that have been expertly matched by supertasters like Strauss.

"Supertasters can compete with the most sophisticated laboratory equipment in their ability to distinguish between herbal constituents," says Dr. Dean. "When illness occurs, additional stresses are placed on the body's natural healing process. To rebuild and strengthen the body's healing process, specific nutrients should be re-absorbed into the body to replenish the drained resources."

"Herbal foods and formulations can provide these nutrients in proper proportions to empower and strengthen specific body functions. Our experience has shown that certain herbs work better together than others, many acting synergistically for specific indications, improving each other's effectiveness."

- News Canada

The Comforts of Camping in Canada’s backyard

(NC)-Camping is a great way to introduce children to adventure and the fun of outdoors while also creating memorable family experiences and spending some quality time together. To help you get started on enjoying the great Canadian wilderness within your budget, the sporting goods team at Canadian Tire has put together a checklist of items to help make your family camping excursion affordable, comfortable and successful.

Camping Checklist
• When looking for a tent, consider how many people will be sleeping in it and the conditions in which you will be using it. Staying dry is the key to comfort under the stars so it's a good idea to look for tents with weather resistant features. Columbia Sportswear has a new line of camping gear out this year that includes a Bugaboo™ tent with the GoBe Dry system, offering ultimate rain protection. Make sure tent stakes and poles are durable. Added comfort features such as built-in cup holders, venting systems and wheeled carry bags are helpful.
• Sleeping bags that keep you warm and comfortable are essential. Fleece lined bags like the Columbia Bugaboo™ sleeping bag provide extra warmth and versatility. From a quality standpoint, make sure the bag has a durable outer shell and easy-to-use zipper.
• For the ultimate in sleeping comfort, try an air mattress. Many models come with built-in pumps with DC adapters making it easy to inflate from your campsite. They also fold into convenient carry bags for easy transportation.
• Keep food cold and fresh in a durable, easy-to-carry cooler. Many models can keep ice for several days, like the Coleman Ultimate Xtreme cooler available at Canadian Tire stores. Durable, comfortable handles are important, and wheels make transportation easy.
• Safety is one of the most important things to think about when planning a family camping trip. Some of the essentials include: A first aid kit, map of the area, flashlights or lanterns, windproof and waterproof lighter and reflective gear for kids.
• Dressing comfortably is important. For durability, look for Columbia Sportswear's new line of PFG recreational clothing and footwear at Canadian Tire. The collection is versatile and includes everything from hikers, shirts, tanks and shorts to pants with UPF sun protection, self-draining pockets and zip-off pant legs – great options for an active family, no matter what the weather.

- News Canada

Planning a successful family camping trip

(NC)—With summer drawing near, families across the country are getting ready to plan their summer vacation. For many that means a family camping trip. To ensure a successful experience, the camping team at Canadian Tire offers the following checklist to assist in the preparation of your trip.

1 Do your homework. Go online and check out sites for national and provincial parks and campgrounds for the area where you plan to camp. You can view campsite descriptions, maps, driving directions, and choose camping preferences such as pet regulations, fishing, beach swimming and much more. Many campgrounds also have an online reservation system.

2 Visit websites for weather information, local and regional weather maps and forecasts so you are aware in advance and know what to expect to equip yourself accordingly.

3 Plan your camp site early so you may choose a site that is close to bathrooms, especially if camping with children and away from trash bins.

4 Simplify your camping set-up by being aware of the necessary camping equipment before you go. That way, you will know which extra tools and accessories to pack and avoid bringing unnecessary items. Canadian Tire has a fully collapsible, portable camp kitchen that lets you cook, wash and store items, just like you would at home, all in one unit.

5 Ensure your camping equipment such as tents, coolers and sleeping bags are in proper, working condition and are ready for use.

6 Do a trial tent setup in your backyard and apply sealer to any interior seams that are not taped. This provides an extra barrier over tiny holes where leaks can occur.

7 Ensure that your vehicle is ready for the trip by having a car inspection that includes an engine tune-up and tire pressure check.

- News Canada

Camping? When it comes to teaching this life lesson, there's nothing better than rolling up your own sleeves and getting everyone involved in volunteering as a family. Not only will you get more quality time with your kids, but you can also teach by example and show them that caring and sharing with others is an important family value, and a key element of a healthy and supportive community.

To get the ball rolling, call some local volunteer agencies and find out what kind of help they need. Then, sit down with your family and find out just what inspires your brood most. You may even decide to get some friends involved!

Here are seven quick and easy ways to plug into causes that will give your family a chance to make a difference:
1. stock food at a local food bank
2. deliver meals to those who are unable to cook at home
3. design a Web site for a local non-profit organization
4. help out an older neighbour by offering to mow the lawn, shop for groceries, run errands, etc.
5. read stories at a children's hospital or a seniors' home
6. organize a park cleanup day in your neighbourhood
7. help hand out water or snacks at a local fundraising walk/bike/skip-a-thon

For more information on how to stay healthy, and prevent disease and injury, visit www.canadian-health-network.ca, a collaboration of the Public Health Agency of Canada and major health organizations across Canada.

- News Canada

Caring for your BBQ

(NC)-Now the weather is warming up, barbeque aficionados have started thinking about the mouth-watering tastes of food cooked on an outdoor grill. Before you fire up the grill this season you'll want to follow these suggestions on grill maintenance from the experts at The Home Depot Canada.

This is a good time to check the tank and gas hose to make sure they're in good condition. "A cracked or faulty hose could be a serious and potentially serious problem if not caught soon enough," warns John DeFranco, The Home Depot's BBQ expert. "Tanks and hoses have a tendency to rust, crack and corrode over time, so it's important that you keep an eye on them and replace them when necessary."

It's also a good idea to check the burners when tuning up your grill. A faulty or broken burner will cut the grilling capacity in half. To replace the burners, all you will need is a Phillips head or standard screwdriver. It helps if you take your used burner with you when buying a replacement to ensure that the new burner is compatible with your grill.

Replacing the coals is another easy and inexpensive step in caring for your grill. When replacing coals in the basket or pan in the bottom of the grill, be sure to spread them equally so your cooking surface will heat evenly and make cooking more efficient.

"If the body of your grill isn't looking its best and you want to give it a new shine, try a coat of high-temperature spray paint," suggests DeFranco. "The paint is an extra layer of protection from the elements such as temperature changes, rain, sleet and snow."

Are the knobs cracked, broken or missing? Don't worry-you can also replace them with relative ease. Finally, be sure to keep your grill covered. There are several styles of grill covers available and they do a great job of protecting the grill even more.
When all is said and done, if your grill is really and shape, it may be time to invest in a new one.

Spend a little time on your grill today, then the during rest of the season, all you need to do is fire it up and decide what's for dinner.

- News Canada

Be prepared for the unexpected: wear your lifejacket

(NC)—It's a beautiful day for boating – the sun is shining, a warm breeze is blowing, and you're having a great time on the water. Just as you get up to put on more sunscreen, a sudden gust of wind causes your boat to rock. Reaching out to find something sturdy to hold on to, you lose your balance and fall over the side without a lifejacket.

You never know what could happen while you're out on the water. On average, 150 people die on Canadian waterways every year, many because they were not wearing a lifejacket. Although you may think you have time to put on your lifejacket if something happens, survivors say this is not always the case. Be prepared — even before you get into your boat. Stability refers to a vessel's ability to withstand high winds, waves and other forces and resist capsizing by righting itself after being heeled over. Stability can be affected by a wide variety of forces such as the movement of fish or liquid in partially filled tanks or fish holds, loose water or fish on deck, heavy ice and heavy loads. Overloading and the associated reduction of freeboard are also major factors leading to fishing vessels capsizing. These factors, however, can be controlled.

To avoid vessel instability, Transport Canada suggests:

Assess your vessel's stability regularly.

Have all significant changes made to your vessel verified by a naval architect.

Be very careful about any change that may impact the vessel's safe weight distribution or the watertight integrity of the hull and the superstructure.

Wear your lifejacket when working on deck in case of capsizing. For more information, please consult Transport Canada's Ship Safety Bulletin Fishing Vessel Safety Record of Modifications available online at www.tc.gc.ca/MarineSafety/bulletins/2008/01-eng.htm or visit your nearest Transport Canada Centre.

-News Canada

10 tips for safe kayaking

(NC)—A kayak might be visible from two kilometres away, but it only takes a large vessel four minutes to cover that distance. Could you paddle your kayak out of danger that fast? In choppy water, powerboat and cargo vessel operators may be unable to see anything on the water that is less than three quarters of a kilometre away. Keeping these facts in mind, here are 10 ways to kayak safely:

1. Increase your visibility by always wearing a red, orange or yellow lifejacket and bright clothing.
2. Paddle in a highly visible kayak.
3. Use lights in low-visibility conditions.
4. Use a watertight VHF radio, one of the best ways of communicating with other ships and Canadian Coast Guard stations. Cellular phones are not a good substitute.
5. Plan your trip based on the least-qualified paddler's skill and fitness level before you head out on the water.
6. Learn the local tide, current and water conditions.
7. Carry approved safety equipment for your kayak.
8. Bring a dry change of clothes in a water-tight container.
9. Kayak in groups of three and consider hiring a qualified guide.
10. Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back.

To learn more, read the Sea Kayaking Safety Guide or visit Transport Canada's Office of Boating Safety at www.boatingsafety.gc.ca.

- News Canada

Eat, shrink and be merry!

(NC)—Living well and losing weight are two things that constantly seem to appear on the "to do" list. This time around achieve your goals with a little help from Food Network along with Janet and Greta Podleski, hosts of the new Canadian television series, Eat, Shrink And Be Merry.

Authors of the hugely popular cookbooks, Looneyspoons , Crazy Plates and Eat, Shrink And Me Merry, Janet and Greta pursue a healthier way of life by making nutritious yet tasty versions of classic dishes. In each episode they then take their dishes to the street to have them judged in a side-by-side taste test. The Podleski's make nutrition fun and believe that losing weight and staying healthy does not mean cutting out all of your favourite dishes. To get started on your new healthier lifestyle, begin with Janet and Greta's five tips and then tune into Eat, Shrink And Be Merry, Tuesdays at 7 p.m. ET for more hints, recipes, and a good dose of laugher to help you stay motivated:

1. Eat smaller meals more often to keep hunger in check, your metabolism up and your mind sharp all day long. Eat a balanced blend of lean protein (turkey or chicken breast), good carbohydrates (veggies, fruits, and whole grains) and healthy fats (olive oil or nuts). If you eat smaller portions more often you'll avoid blood sugar spikes and uncontrollable urges to binge.

2. Do you enjoy dining out? If so, take notice. Many restaurant entrees have 1,000 to 1,500 calories not including the bread, appetizer, beverage, or dessert. If you're a frequent diner, try sharing your meal, ordering an appetizer as the main course, or asking for a doggie bag that you can take to work for lunch. If your still craving dessert, halve your cake and eat it too!

3. Has losing 5 lbs. been on your list of things to do for a while now? Then plan for a whiteout! Despite their saintly colour, refined sugar and flour can be dietary devils that encourage overeating and weight gain. They cause a quick rise in blood sugar, followed by a rise in blood insulin (a hormone that leads to weight gain) levels. Try avoiding refined sugar and white flour for at least two weeks. Instead, choose whole, unprocessed, nutritious foods, including veggies, fruit, whole grains, beans, nuts, and lean meats.

4. People often ask, "What's the one relatively simple thing I can do to help me lose weight?" The answer is: cut back on nighttime snacking. Put a "closed" sign on the refrigerator door at about 7:30 p.m. Not only will this kitchen curfew give your liver a much-deserved break from digestion duties, freeing it to concentrate on its lengthy 'to-do' list while you're sleeping, but you'll also cut out a ton of calories.

5. In the healthy eating game, we all know that vegetables win the Most Valuable Player Award hands down, helping us to control weight and feel great. However, they also have a very high water content, and that means they're also high in oxygen. In order for your lean muscle tissue to burn fat, it needs oxygen to help convert that fat into energy.

- News Canada

Ask the travel expert

Q: My family is looking for the perfect beach holiday for the family this winter. Just as important, he says, is getting properly fitted for those clubs.

While custom fitting was once considered a luxury, it should be a common practice for anyone looking to buy a new set of clubs, explains Wallis.

"Virtually everyone's golf swing is unique, which is why it's critical to be sure your clubs are set up specifically for you," says Wallis. "A simple half-hour session can elevate your game immediately. Like anything that can be fitted, custom is always better."

While many retailers and golf course pro shops can manually fit people for their clubs, Callaway Golf Canada now has both a Mobile Performance Team, which custom fits on site at participating golf course facilities with vector launch systems, as well as Performance Centres in Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto that utilize the latest technology used to fit touring professionals. The overwhelming demand at the original fitting centre in Toronto led to the launch of the new centres in Calgary and Vancouver this spring.

Cutting-edge computer analysis, high-speed digital technology and hands-on expertise of certified club-fitting professionals combine to analyze a number of important swing factors.

"We take into consideration clubhead speed, ball speed, angle of attack, launch angle, ball spin rate, carry distance and total distance," says Wallis. "With all this logged onto the system, we can then fit a golfer for shaft lengths, flexes and blade angles that fit their game."

More information is available online at www.callawaygolf.com/ca.

- News Canada

Perfect Packing Tips

(NC)—Packing smart is a great way to save time and avoid unnecessary hassles. Become the "Leader of the Pack" with the following easy tips for your next business trip:

• Use space within space. Roll socks and undergarments and place them in shoes. Uncoil belts and place them around the inside edges of your suitcase.

• Take advantage of hotel amenities and leave the little things at home. Holiday Inn hotels provide shampoos, soap and hair dryers (and more) in every guest room.

• Pack items that can be mixed and matched to provide multiple outfit options and eliminate over-packing.

• Utilize your laptop bag. Holiday Inn hotels offer comfortable working stations in every room, complete with free high-speed internet access. Pack any work-related items with your laptop for quick and easy access before or after a meeting.

• Pack items such as lotions, perfumes and colognes in zip-top plastic bags to avoid messy travel accidents.

- News Canada

Take a worry-free beach vacation.

(NC)—Many Canadians remember the sunscreen but forget the travel insurance when heading to the beach. No one wants to think that their long-awaited beach vacation will be anything but perfect, however the unexpected can happen anywhere—from flights cancelled due to bad winter weather to falling ill while on vacation. A little advance preparation can help ensure your days on the beach are worry-free.

Too often, Canadians are finding out after the fact that their credit cards don't cover all of their medical expenses and their employer's insurance plan won't reimburse for missed flights. Purchasing a good travel insurance plan means that these costs and more are covered in the event of illness, medical emergencies, travel delays, lost baggage, and more.

Trusted travel insurance companies provide cost-effective travel assistance that can help stranded passengers get home or to their destination, provide emergency care and navigate the unfamiliar territory of foreign hospitals.

"We consistently see examples of people needing to go to a hospital where nearly no English or French is spoken," says Nathan LaFayette, at AIG Travel Guard. "As a travel insurance provider, we have multi-lingual emergency assistance coordinators on staff to guarantee good quality care when people need it the most. And, we cover the costs so that they can focus on getting better."

More information about travel insurance is available online at www.travelguard.ca.

- News Canada

Party hosting with a twist.

(NC)—Today's best house parties are all about the entertainment. Whether a casual get-together or a formal dinner party, event planner Carlton Aylett of Krista Slack and Associates offers these helpful tips to host a party with a twist that everyone will enjoy:

Get digital: Technology has emerged as a key component of today's parties with MP3 players loaded with party-friendly songs replacing the need for a DJ or having a massive CD collection on hand. As well, web-based tools like e-vites will easily send out invitations to all of your contacts and will help you keep track of who still has to RSVP.

Give your party a theme: To add a touch of fun to the festivities, Aylett suggests giving the party a theme, which can be worked into the invitations, menu, decorations and entertainment. Serving a selection of themed cocktails will also save you the trouble and expense of having a well stocked bar.

Out-of-the box entertainment: Consider the mix of guests at the party – relatives of all ages, friends only, or those with kids. Then think of potential activities to keep them engaged between conversations. One of the latest trends is to break out the popular Wii from Nintendo, an easy pick-up-and-play video game system for everyone. "The Wii is a great way to break the ice and get everyone moving," explains Aylett. "A game like Wii Sports features popular activities like tennis, baseball and bowling that will appeal to almost anyone, regardless of their experience or age. It'll be as much fun to play as it is to watch". Would-be hosts looking for help can also tap into various sites that offer tips on how to throw a successful Wii-party like www.getupandplay.ca.

It's easy to get overwhelmed while planning an event, but the best rule of thumb is to keep things simple. Don't forget that as the host, you're supposed to be having fun too, so at some point, put your hosting duties on hold and take part in celebrating with the closest of your friends.

Other tips on how to throw a great party are available online at www.wiiparty.net.

- News Canada

Gear up for another year of golf.

(NC)—Gearing up for another year on the golf course involves more than just dusting off your clubs and heading to the course. Take a few moments to examine your equipment, assess your spring fitness level, and keep a few tips in mind to help ease yourself – and your equipment – into another year of golf.

Equipment overhaul

After you've retrieved your golf clubs from the closet (hopefully you didn't store them in the garage, where they can be damaged by cold air and humidity), do a close inspection on all your clubs to check for rust or imperfections on the shaft or head, and any cracking on the grips.

"Look to see if your grips are shiny, if so, it is time to replace them," recommends Barry Wallis, on-staff golf professional at Callaway Golf Canada. "To clean last year's dirt off your clubs, fill a bucket with warm soapy water and scrub your clubs from top to bottom, then dry them completely."

Fitness check and warm-up

Before you head to the course for your first round of the season, take your freshly-cleaned clubs to the driving range. Before hitting any balls, take at least 10-15 minutes to stretch your hands, wrists, back, arms, hips and legs. Start slowly and stop if anything starts to hurt. And, most importantly – keep it short.

"Limit your first session at the driving range to one bucket of balls," says Wallis. "Straining yourself this early in the season could sideline you from the course for weeks."

Round one: start slow

When you are finally ready for your first round (preferably at least three days after your first time back at the driving range), have another stretching session. And once you are on the course, resist the temptation to hit the ball as hard and fast as you can right away.

"Start practicing with half wedges, then full wedges, then work your way up from a nine-iron to driver," says Wallis. "By easing into the season, you'll be more likely to stay injury-free until the snow falls again."

- News Canada

This party theme is a sure bet. Bingo is out, poker is in.

(NC)—To make your party rock - and be remembered as an ingenious host - consider throwing a poker-themed party.

Poker is a game that requires skill and strategy, yet it is easy enough for anyone to learn. It's a card game destined to raise the 'enthusiasm' stakes for every guest, and no doubt, each one will finish the night as a winner. Take a look at these tips on how to do it easily, courtesy of the poker-party experts at PokerRoom.com:

• Don't show me the money: High stakes gambling is not required at the family poker game. Who says you can't play for spare change or for the inglorious job of loading the dishwasher? If you do want to play for money, consider donating the entire pot to charity.

• Get everyone on the same page: Provide guests with a tip sheet that details card rankings, hand nicknames and odds. Printable versions of the basic rules, as well as tips and tricks on how to play, is on the site, PokerRoom.com. Making sure everyone knows the rules up front will also help avoid arguments when the game heats up.

• Give guests a poker alter-ego: Develop poker nicknames for your friends and family before they arrive. This can be a fun icebreaker and a way of introducing people to one another. Your guests will get a kick out of referring to each other as "Kamikaze Karl" or "Shifty-eyes Sharon."

• Set up the game: A family poker game is easy. It requires only a deck of cards a table and some chairs. The game can be themed for any celebration, at any time of year.

• Help guests prepare: Make sure your invitation indicates that that your party will include a poker element and offer suggestions for your guests to sharpen their skills before the big event.

- News Canada

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://myleisurenews.blogspot.com/2008/03/this-party-theme-is-sure-bet-bingo-is.html' title='This party theme is a sure bet.
